My Boss is an Idiot

Working hard and being extremely competent in what you do is not the key to getting a promotion. Not when you have an idiot and a fool as a boss, supervisor or manager. All of us may at one time or other work with bosses who belong to that “no-brain,no-skill” category, and our favorite happy-hour conversations always center upon how these bosses got to that position ofpower in the first place. It is anybody's guess, from the boot-licker theory to the sleeping-with-the-right-person theory. Whatever it may be, we can't sack our bosses. All is not lost though, because we can do certain things to turn the situation to our advantage.

Story: The Ass in the Lion's Skin

[Illus by Milo Winter]

An Ass found a Lion's skin left in the forest by a hunter. He dressed himself in it, and amused himself by hiding in a thicket and rushing out suddenly at the animals who passed that way. All took to their heels the moment they saw him. The Ass was so pleased to see the animals running away from him, just as if he were King Lion himself, that he could not keep from expressing his delight by a loud, harsh bray.

A Fox, who ran with the rest, stopped short as soon as he heard the voice. Approaching the Ass, he said with a laugh: "If you had kept your mouth shut you might have frightened me, too. But you gave yourself away with that silly bray."

Moral: Fine clothes may disguise, but silly words will disclose a fool. A fool may deceive by his dress and appearance, but his words will soon show what he really is. No disguise will hide one's true character.

Lessons in life: Does your boss look like a Lion but is actually an Ass? It is easyto recognize a fool. This person boasts of many years of working experience and has the paper qualifications to prove his worth. However, when he speaks, you begin to wonder if he had been sleeping on his job or had bought his degree through an auction. His knowledge can at best pass off for a first-year trainee and his senseless decisions are often proven wrong. You keep your ears to the ground and true enough, it is an opinion shared by many other colleagues and people of average qualification and training.

One word to describe your boss –“stupid”. How can you possibly work for an idiot boss? The answer lies in what you intend to accomplish at this workplace.

One: be a Hero, challenge every foolish decision and expose the stupidity. Good luck to you. You are one step away from the exit door.

Two: be a Survivor like those you see on the reality TV show. Learn the Outwit, Ouplay and Outlast strategy.

Stick to your career planand don't let anybody stand in your way. The first type of personality, a hero exposing villains, leads to career suicide. Even if you manage to successfully topple one employer, subsequent employers would think twice about employing you for fear that you might do the same to them. Better to be a Survivor. Here are some points to think about when working for idiots: -Give boss the benefit of doubt.

Under old management styles, employees are promoted based on seniority. The longer you are on the job, the higher you climb. Even if the person is aware of his limitations, he cannot help but move up the ranks. The alternative is to remain behind while peers and cohorts surge ahead. Perhaps the boss was one such pathetic soul, caught in the tide, and his position of power wasn't something he asked for and yet was something nobody in the right mind would refuse.

Respect the position and not the person

From a psychological angle, it is easier to accept that we are taking instructions from the Head Office even though the CEO sitting in that office was the one issuing them. Think about it -“The management wants this to be done” versus “Mr X wants this to be done.” When a name is behind the order, it gets personal and we start to attach to it our feelings and emotions. We are unlikely to do a good job knowing that we are helping a person we do not respect. However, if we consider ourselves doing the task for the company which has been paying us the salary, we are more likely to obey and perform to the best of our ability. It sounds subtle but in our opinion, it does help to cast aside the ill feelings when getting a job done.

Do not be a threat

Out do or out smart others, but not the boss. Humans and animals are alike; when they sense a threat, they put up all their defenses and prepare to spring counter-attacks at the appropriate moments. At meetings or in the public, avoid posing difficult questions which you know the boss will not be able to answer. Do not challenge his views openly and make him look silly. Be modest about yourself. If word gets to the boss or if he senses that you are more suited to sit in his chair, he may stifle your promotion. Such bosses always feel insecure. Put all your intellect into producing outstanding work, but in the presence of your boss, let him think that you are not as clever as he is.

We mentioned about being modest, but that was about not letting your boss or colleagues know exactly how clever or smart you are. When it comes to achievements, be explicit, put your name on every assignment or project. A boss who is not smart and not sharp cannot read between the lines or take hints. Unless you tell him what you have done, he may not realize the extent of your contributions to the organization. It is always good to remind the boss of the deals you have closed, the profits you have added to the bottom line, the projects that are successfully completed. When you rope in new clients, be sure to introduce them to your boss. The clients feel a sense of importance and the boss remembers it better than a mere memo informing him about the new accounts. When you receive praises and commendation letters pertaining to your service, arrange for them to be circulated or copied to your boss. In short, be visible and get noticed.

Help boss meet goals

One key task is to erode the boss's power over you. The best way to do that is understand the boss's plans and help him meet his goals. That's right, help him, not impede him. By doing that, you gain his trust and confidence. In getting higher profile jobs and major projects, you take away his dominant control over you. He can do less harm knowing that your role is crucial in enhancing his career.

Be patient

The more foolish the boss is, the more indispensable you would be. The company needs you to get the job done and if you play your cards right, the boss will want to keep you by his side.He is only the front, you are the doer. Knowing that will motivate you if you have sufficient patience. In a crisis situation, the boss will have to come to you for help, and thatis when you can expect better rewards and enjoy a better bargaining position. Be patient, learn as much as you can, excel in your field of work and the day will come when you are invaluable to the company.

Live and let live

No matter how good we are, there are others who are better. The old wisdom applies - “Don't do unto others what you don't want others to do unto you.” There is a tendency to let everyone in the office know how you feel about your boss and do things to spite him or make him look bad. Think how it would be like should a brighter person come along and feel the same way about you. A lot of relationship problems can be resolved just by putting yourself in the shoes of the other party. If you simply cannot resist throwing an insult, quote other people instead

e.g., Jamie Lee Curtis: “To call you stupid would be an insult to stupid people. I've known sheep that could outwit you. I've worn dresses with higher IQs. But you think you're an intellectual, don't you, ape?”

Asics GT2110

My GT2110 had been with me since somewhen mid june 2005 till today...but to my surprise it still perform as well to my expectation.
Asics had never cross my mind before this GT, the only sports shoe brand that I would consider were either Nike or Adidas, but now Asics had taken their place.

Remembered the first time I walk into the store at Asics concept store at Marina Square, the friendly staff there really know their product well and gave me professional advice for choosing a right running shoe. When comes to serious running (although I am not).

"Chioness" is the last thing to consider, suitability/fitability/comfortability is stand above everything (when money is no concern). But at that point of time, I had already bought an not so good but ok Adidas running shoe which I think it was 1/2 size small for my feet. Those days with it was torturing to my toes. So left not much for this $180 + GT.

I wanted to have one Kayano at that time, I think it was Kayano 12 then, but due to my wide flat feet, I have to go for this GT 2E version which is wider in the sole.

On the wishlist now is Asics Kayano 14.

BigDog

Heck, this thing really give me a shock when i first watch it, looks like a noisy headless horse.

The Most Advanced Quadruped Robot on EarthBigDog is the alpha male of the Boston Dynamics family of robots. It is a quadruped robot that walks, runs, and climbs on rough terrain and carries heavy loads. BigDog is powered by a gasoline engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system. BigDog's legs are articulated like an animal’s, and have compliant elements that absorb shock and recycle energy from one step to the next. BigDog is the size of a large dog or small mule, measuring 1 meter long, 0.7 meters tall and 75 kg weight.
BigDog has an on-board computer that controls locomotion, servos the legs and handles a wide variety of sensors. BigDog’s control system manages the dynamics of its behavior to keep it balanced, steer, navigate, and regulate energetics as conditions vary. Sensors for locomotion include joint position, joint force, ground contact, ground load, a laser gyroscope, and a stereo vision system. Other sensors focus on the internal state of BigDog, monitoring the hydraulic pressure, oil temperature, engine temperature, rpm, battery charge and others.
In separate trials, BigDog runs at 4 mph, climbs slopes up to 35 degrees, walks across rubble, and carries a 340 lb load.BigDog is being developed by Boston Dynamics with the goal of creating robots that have rough-terrain mobility that can take them anywhere on Earth that people and animals can go. The program is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA).

Been told by the feng shui master to get a peony flower picture to hang on the wall.
And that wall so happen to be the wall of the bomb shelter.

So let the drilling project begin, I bought anf $16.50 power drill ,"made in china" of course or else hell to get this price...whats a rubbish anyway, the drill bit holder can't really hold the bits, the RRO and NRRO is...nabeh super runout. But that's ok, I asked myself what do you expect from this $16.50 power driller?

So I go get my drill bits ready and start drilling, no problem at all from the surface to until 1cm depth and the progress stop, I hit the steel...so I changed my drill bit to steel bit....yinnn...yinnn...yinnn...no progress, so I walk to sun plaza to get a new steel drill bit. continued the drilling and yet no progress, then I si beh lin chat hardworking and go to causeway point to buy Bosch drill bit which I think would be harder and makes the drilling possible...

Until I came across this wonderful 3M Picture Hanging Strips.

This thing really works wonder. With 4 sets of it, it holds up an almost 4kg painting.

How to get rid of birds dropping at HDB windows

Do you have problem of bird dropping at your windows, especially if your are staying at lower HDB blocks with greeny trees in front?

I have this sickening problem for many moons before I found a method to chase those away. I've been looking for the chemical and hardware repellents at every chances I saw a DIY shop and hardware shops. To my surprise it wasn't really easy to find bird repellent at all.

Damn, the birds still stop and drop at my windows. I still continue to wash up once every couple of weeks, it depends on their like.
And then I thought of this......CATS. Bird scare of cats, yeah right. So I gave them this to scare the shit out of them.
Just paste them at your windows of problem, you'll have peace of mind.
Its not that I do not like birds, just that I do not like their dropping, it may one day toxicate you.

Coldplay-Lovers in Japan and Reign Of Love

Lovers, keep on the road you're on
Runners, until the race is run
Soldiers, you've got to soldier on
Sometimes even right is wrong

They are turning my head out
To see what I'm all about
Keeping my head down
To see what it feels like now
But I have no doubt
One day, we are gonna get out

Tonight maybe we're gonna run
Dreaming of the Osaka sun
Ohh ohh...
Dreaming of when the morning comes

The new thriller reteaming acclaimed director David Cronenberg with his A History of Violence leading man Viggo Mortensen, Eastern Promises is written by Steve Knight (Academy Award-nominated screenwriter of Dirty Pretty Things). As in the earlier film, director and star together explore the psyche, physicality, and fortunes of a man whose true nature may never be wholly revealed. The mysterious and charismatic Russian-born Nikolai Luzhin (Mr. Mortensen) is a driver for one of London most notorious organized crime families of Eastern European origin. The family itself is part of the Vory V Zakone criminal brotherhood. Headed by Semyon (Academy Award nominee Armin Mueller-Stahl), whose courtly charm as the welcoming proprietor of the plush Trans-Siberian restaurant impeccably masks a cold and brutal core, the family fortunes are tested by Semyon volatile son and enforcer, Kirill (Vincent Cassel), who is more tightly bound to Nikolai than to his own father. But Nikolai carefully maintained existence is jarred once he crosses paths at Christmastime with Anna Khitrova (Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts), a midwife at a North London hospital. Anna is deeply affected by the desperate situation of a young teenager who dies while giving birth to a baby. Anna resolves to try to trace the baby lineage and relatives. The girl personal diary also survives her; it is written in Russian, and Anna seeks answers in it. Anna mother Helen (Sind Cusack) does not discourage her, but Anna irascible Russian-born uncle Stepan (Jerzy Skolimowski) urges caution. He is right to do so; by delving into the diary, Anna has accidentally unleashed the full fury of the Vory. With Semyon and Kirill closing ranks and Anna pressing her inquiries, Nikolai unexpectedly finds his loyalties divided. The family tightens its grip on him; who can, or should, he trust? Several lives including his own hang in the balance as a harrowing chain of murder, deceit, and retribution reverberates through the darkest corners of both the family and London itself.

SiCKO 2007

Michael Moore has until now has been seen as a controversial figure, especially after his last film Fahrenheit 9/11. If you support the current President, you hate Moore, and vice-versa.
This latest film will likely bring Moore towards the center of the American spectrum because it deals directly with something no one can avoid or ignore: our health.
Moore emphasizes this early on in the film, telling viewers that this film is not about those without insurance, or those who have lost their jobs. Instead, Sicko is meant for those of us who have insurance; those who feel that they with jobs and who feel protected because they have job with benefits.
Moore seriously questions this notion with three points:
1. The current state of health care is an invention of HMOs starting during the Nixon presidency. The reason it works is because it makes a profit, and in order to make a profit, patients must receive as little care as possible. Otherwise, the insurance companies suffer what they call a "company loss." To health insurance companies, losing your life is not a loss, but them losing a few buck is certainly a loss.
2. Other industrialized nations, including Canada, the UK, and France, have "socialized" national health care that work not just adequately, but better than our American system of private health insurance. One example of this is that doctors are paid more if the patient suffers less and is happier. Waiting time is less, usually no more than an hour in the emergency room, and doctors are paid well enough to live a pretty good life, full of flat-screen TVs, wining and dining, and luxury automobiles.
3. The HMOs have bought the federal government and have ultimately stopped any talk, let alone action, towards nationalized health care. Using a combining of propaganda and fear mongering, private health insurance companies like Kaiser have prevented any move that would end their reign of endless profits at the cost of American lives.
Sicko immediately changes your view of the value of life in the US. It delicately offers humor and tragedy with real-life stories of the average American who doesn't fall through the cracks of health care in the US, but is "intentionally swept into a crack created by the health care industry," as one person who worked inside that industry describes.
Moore will most likely be assailed by conservatives and nationalists for his favorable view of Cuba in this film. This is the one weakness in the film, as Moore looks to outside nations for solutions. If there is one Achilles heal, it is Moore's discussion of Cuba as a model for health care. Moore cleverly wraps the subject of September 11 around this discussion, so it now remains to be seen how conservatives will respond.
With the 2008 elections looming next year, Moore's latest documentary will likely put the question of national health care front and center, and Presidential candidates (including Hillary Clinton who is featured prominently) would be wise to start formulating to their answers.

I think most of the insurance company or the insurance agents main priority is to make money first before you benefit of protection. That is the one reason why they are richer than you do. In the circle of healthcare too, the drugs company also making money in the business, if you look at why with so many new drugs and technology these days, yet the health of the peoples is not improving but deteriorating.

Coldplay Viva La Vida

To say there has been a lot of anticipation for Coldplay’s fourth album, Viva La Vida, is an understatement. Having enlisted legendary leftfield producer Brian Eno, borrowed their album title from a painting by renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and made tantalising remarks about sonic reinvention, the world has been curious (to say the least) to hear what the ‘new’ Coldplay might sound like. Viva La Vida definitely makes some departures from the band’s usual formula, which happens to be one of the most commercially successful rock-pop blueprints of recent years. The plangent chords, emotive melodies, stadium-rock rhythms and universal lyrical concerns remain, but Martin and co. have gone out on several limbs here, incorporating instrumental tracks ("Life In Technicolour"), using subtle North African and Latin elements ("Yes", "Strawberry Swing"), and overhauling previously strict verse-chorus-verse structures in favour of slightly more avant arrangements. The old Coldplay still shine through (see tracks like "Violet Hill" and the title song) but even their classic sound feels more muscular and confident. The band’s new flourishes, cosmetic and self-conscious as they may be, are enough to make Viva La Vida a welcome break from the old routine--Danny McKenna
